Looks like we actually have a few horror films to look forward to! Let me be your beacon of light in the darkness, my horror junkies... Now first up, we have a new entry in the ‘Blair Witch’ series that releases soon. Joining the production side is Simon Barrett and Adam Wingard, the latter is known for his modern classic ‘You’re Next’. This 2011 film is no-holds-barred and isn’t afraid to push the envelope!
The new ‘Blair Witch’ has a cast of relatively unknowns, keeping in tradition of the well received original film in the series. With found footage style in toe, the movie goes back to its roots in the Black Hills of Maryland. Starring James Allen McCune & Callie Hernandez, we expect to see it released soon on September 16!
Another reboot is on its way in the form of ‘It’, the sideshow circus clown who is known to plot and scheme and then haunt your dreams. A Raggedy Andy mindfuck of a project that doesn’t exactly have a release date yet but recently went through a major casting change.
Cary Fukunaga, director of the riveting masterpiece known as True Detective, was attached to direct ‘It’ but eventually left the project due to a severe clash of visions. Fukunaga & his writing partner Chase Palmer worked on the script for 3 years only to leave the production due to disputes and disagreements. Leaving the new director Andrés Muschietti to pick up the pieces.
Andrés is best known for his work directing the horror film ‘Mama’, and is also developing a movie adaptation of the video game ‘Shadow of the Colossus. I consider Mama to actually be somewhat of a decent film. I am hoping that Andrès can tone down the jump scares however, I think it could potentially make the project look borderline parody.
Next up we have news on one of my favorite modern horror classic films, the INSIDIOUS franchise! Insidious 4 will be directed by newcomer Adam Robitel and is written by Leigh Whannell. Mr. Robitel is the director of the underground hit “The Taking of Deborah Logan”, which simmered by the water cooler as somewhat of a low budget cult favorite. Whannell has been a staple to the Insidious films as a write, actor, director and actually was tapped to direct the previous entry in the series, Insidious: Chapter 3.
All the fan favorites should be making an appearance, along with Lin Shaye playing her fantastic role as the parapsychologist Elise Rainier. I expect that the astral plane called The Further will also be playing another intricate part in the film. The movie has a current placeholder release date for October 20, 2017 and should begin filming within the next few months.
And last but not least, we have the newly announced Phantasm V: Ravager! The director of the reboot is David Hartman, who you may also know from such shows as ‘The Adventures of Jackie Chan’, and ‘Laser Fart’, will helm the fifth entry in this old school franchise. Reggie Bannister and A. Michael Baldwin will round out the cast along with the Tall Man, played by a gentleman with the best name ever, Angus Scrimm. Phantasm V: Ravager will be out in theaters later this year!
